Here is to the Polar Vortex coming this week, or as we at our house call it the Polar Freeze Your Tootsies Off Vortex. I guess this signals winter is coming early this year. Maybe we can hope for an early spring too? That is what I will be hoping for, early Spring 2015. I am already looking at seeds for next year.

This month I thought I would share my thankfulness thoughts with you. It is the month to be thankful after all.
I am most thankful for my family. Who have joined me on the wild ride called farming. They support me with everything they have and really pitch in as team members on the farm.
I would like to thank our community who has come out and supported our efforts here at Princeton Farm Fresh. I look forward to every Friday. To seeing all the fresh produce that comes to the market and the customers who love what we (farmers) do. I am truly thankful for YOU (Princeton) allowing and supporting this market.

When I was still dreaming of being a farmer I read a DK (Dorling Kindersley) book entitled “Country Life, A Handbook for Realist and Dreamers” I read that book from cover to cover, which was easy because it was full of pictures and drawings of how to run a farm. One of the things I found so interesting was how many things you could grow on as little as a tenth of an acre. They called it a Garden Farm and within its small confines they grew not only a sizeable garden, but pigs, chickens, bees, ducks and a sizeable compost pile. I will post a picture on our Facebook page today so you can see all the great ideas for small scale farming. Within this book my dreams became a reality. I started right in our own tenth of an acre subdivision with raised beds (Fourteen 4×8 ft beds), chickens and ducks. I could only dream of having a farm one day, but I started where I was. I hope that if you have a dream of farming that you too, will start right where you are today. Start small, see if you like it, and grow with your dreams.

What a weekend we have had here on the farm. I picked 7.5 gallons in peppers. I had no idea that there were that many peppers on the plants.
Eric and I planted 800 garlic cloves and 800 onion sets for next Springs production.
We successfully got the foundation laid, most of the rafters up, and part of the front and back done this weekend on the greenhouse. I can’t thank the folks that came out enough for all of their help. Our family loved having all the kiddos here and being able to share our farm with you.
I love that we are growing our farming family here in Kentucky. You have all made us feel so welcome here, and I can’t thank you enough.

The Market is Open


October in Kentucky is just beautiful. I am enjoying the cooler weather and the leaves changing. Here is what we are doing here on the farm in the month of October.
We are running late on everything. I don’t know how I got behind, maybe I never got caught up from the summer. We are making a dibbler to make planting garlic and onions easier. It will take us a good long day to plant 16 pounds of garlic and 20 pounds of onions. We are plotting our revenge on the rabbits in the garden who ate all of our kale, lettuce, cabbage and mustard that we put out earlier in the fall. We are still planting in the high tunnel lots of spinach, carrots, radishes, beets, lettuce, kale, and swiss chard. Our lambs are due to go to the processor this week and we are anticipating ground lamb for sale in the next few weeks. Busy, busy time of the year with so much to do, and things to get into the ground before we cannot anymore.
Plus we are putting up our Greenhouse next weekend. We would love more help to come out and tackle this with us. I promise you a fun day with lots of great food to boot.

Fall is definitely here! I love that we have seasons here in Kentucky. In Georgia we had a long Summer and a short Winter. Fall and Spring lasted only a few weeks, and there was hardly any fall color. We may not have a New England display of color, but for me, it is spectacular.
This week you will find a listing for a Greenhouse building party. I really hope that you can come out an join us. It will be a time to get to know your farm, enjoy community, and eat great food grown right here on our farm. Plus you can visit with the sheep, chickens, and our five Great Pyrenees dogs.

It seems fall may indeed be here! The leaves are starting to change, the weather is thinking about cooling down, and the kids are back in school. Everything should be settling back into a routine by now.
At our farm almost all summer veggies are out of the high tunnel, and the rabbits are eating voraciously at the seedlings in the garden. The garlic has arrived for next years harvest, and we will be planting it in the next few days. Onion seeds are growing and will be in the ground next month- just before the first frost. I am trying to be proactive for next year and getting beds laid, so I don’t have to wait on the ground drying up in the spring.
I wanted to let you know of a decision that was made a few weeks ago by our Meat Farmer. James from Riverbend Farms is a dedicated dad, who gets his kids on the bus in the morning and makes sure that he is there for them when they get home. He attends all of their events and when they are home from school they go with him to the farm. He has come to the realization that during the school year he needs to be closer to home more often now. His kiddos are getting older and are involved in more and more activities. I begged him not to drop our little farmers market and we agreed that coming twice a month would be an option to keep our customers happy and still provide him the time to care for his little ones. So you can look for James and his Grassfed Beef and Pastured Pork on the first and third Friday’s of every month, and if we have a fifth Friday he will be here too.

What beautiful weather to come home to. Ray and I had such a wonderful time at Armed to Farm and have returned rejuvenated and ready to implement the things we learned into our own farm. It was nice meeting other Veterans and learning about their goals and dreams in regards to farming.
I think my biggest take away was to farm in moderation. We have not been doing that. I would say we have had too many irons in the fire. After sitting down with our family and discussing our future we have decided to pair down our operation and really focus on a few areas instead of the 5 or 6 we have going. We will be pairing down our chickens to the point of only keeping enough for ourselves in the future. We will be pairing down our sheep herd until we have more paddocks fenced. We will increase our vegetable production in the coming years and will continue to fence. Fencing has turned into the job that never ends on our farm and we need to devote a major time investment into getting all of our fencing up.
As we streamline our farm, I am hoping that it gives us more time for family and community. I have wanted to be more involved in our community but have had the feeling of being in over my head, with never enough time to devote to the projects on the farm. I look forward to getting to know more folks in our community and getting involved in the activities that Princeton has to offer. We have a wealth of community pride and I can’t wait to get involved!

The Market is Open


Ray and I are heading out to get more hands on training at “Armed to Farm” a sustainable agriculture training for Veterans this week. We are excited to learn from others that are being successful farming, and bring home ways to make more local food available right here in our community.
The kids (Hannah & Jonah) will be running the market this week. I guess I should stop calling them kids as Jonah just turned 20 and Hannah is almost 18, but to a mom they will always be kids. I know that they will take great care of you while I am learning this week. I find it quite an accomplishment on their part that they can take care of the farm and market with their capable hands. Barring any escaping doggies, they should be just fine to hold down the fort.
